Xiomara (Xio) is an ambitious 16-year-old kung fu student with her sights set on an elusive black belt. There’s just one catch: her Sifu requires every black-belt contender to use their martial arts training in service to society.

Fortunately, society has a HUGE problem.

​

The country is currently under siege by giant mutant mosquitoes accidentally created on an intergalactic space station. Immune to conventional insecticides and packing venom that can paralyse a grown adult almost instantly and kill within thirty minutes, they’ve already claimed thousands of lives. The streets empty at dusk, the country is under curfew, nightlife is dead, and the economy isn’t looking too healthy either.

 

The government, naturally, insists the situation is well under control. But the opposition is demanding an immediate election.

Xio decides her community-service project will be simple: wipe out the mosquitoes.

Earning her black belt is only part of the motivation. This is personal. One of the mosquitoes’ many innocent victims was her beloved goldfish.

​

Armed with her inhaler, some experimental Cuban anti-venom, a bagful of electric flyswatters, and SCRAM—the country’s only almost-certified mutant-mosquito repellent—Xio slips out before curfew and heads for the creatures’ breeding ground in the swamp.

​

There, she puts every bit of her kung fu training to work and begins thinning out the colony. But when the massive Mosquito Queen joins the fight, Xio quickly finds herself outmatched. Bitten and already succumbing to the venom, she has only minutes to destroy the Queen, wipe out the colony, save herself—

And most importantly, qualify for that damn black belt!
