The Wedding Posse

wedding posse.jpg

n the weekend of Curtis’ 30th birthday, Dev, Xiomara, Ian, and Sheri descend on Curtis’ new home in Tobago. Curtis is not exactly thrilled to have his high-school posse visit this particular weekend because he’s hosting a party for his boss and work colleagues in anticipation of a much-desired promotion, and his friends are famous around the entire Caribbean for their shenanigans.

Ian, long-ago entranced by Sheri despite her obvious mental and emotional issues, has always been too shy to profess his love. Xiomara has always been attracted to Curtis, but is aware of his lack of interest, so has never pursued him. Dev is well on his way to being a full-blown alcoholic, struggling with the weight of being the only son in a family of girls and a fear of his overly strict father, while Curtis is an overachiever from the “wrong side of town” who has defied society’s expectations of his failure while safeguarding his own deeply held secrets.

The first night is a riot of laughter as they trip down memory lane recalling some memorable exploits at weddings they mostly had not been invited to. But Sheri resurrects memories of her late twin brother, Shaun, who died under mysterious circumstances a few years previously. That throws a pall over the rest of the night;. everyone gets very drunk, and Curtis and Xiomara wind up sleeping together, much to his dismay.

The following day, while Curtis and Ian argue about the fact that Curtis didn’t return home for Shaun’s funeral, Xiomara thinks she sees Shaun’s ghost, which makes her very nervous. Dev desperately tries to contact an unknown person, but fails, and continues drinking heavily. Meanwhile, Sheri seems to be descending into madness as she downs a multitude of pills and obsesses over a white peignoir that she brought with her. Curtis grows increasingly uneasy about having them present and his attitude ruffles everyone’s feathers. The second night is tense, with sightings of Shaun’s ghost by both Dev and Ian, who have totally opposite reactions. A drunken Dev accidentally destroys Curtis’ brand new cell phone, and Xiomara is frustrated because Curtis is avoiding her and she has severe writer’s block against her new book. Sheri discovers a strange painting hidden in Curtis’ laundry closet that sends her into hiding in the bedroom.

On the day of the party, everything that can goes wrong. Dev and Xiomara have a blow-up about Dev’s secret love who he refuses to tell his family about because she’s not Indian. Dev’s drinking reaches crisis proportions, forcing Curtis to insist that Ian and Xiomara supervise him. Sheri insinuates herself into Curtis’ boss’ good books and starts telling him Curtis’ secrets, and Curtis sics Ian on her. But when she accuses Curtis of sleeping with and then discarding Shaun, thereby causing his suicide, the party is destroyed. Ian and Curtis have a knock-down fight when Curtis accuses Sheri of seducing Shaun as well, and the entire Posse falls apart.
